Sam Hodge
National Political Director
Sam Hodge grew up in Blue Springs, Missouri and is the product of two public school teachers. In high school, Sam became involved in politics by forming the first political group, a democratic club, at Blue Springs South High School. Sam's passion for politics continued in college. In 2004, Sam went to Truman State University and majored in Political Science and History. Sam quickly joined the College Democrats of Truman State, but upon arriving to campus, Sam recognized the need for an organized, political gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender group. So, with the help of supportive faculty members, Sam created the first political group focused on GLBT issues on Truman's campus. The Stonewall Group quickly became one of the largest groups for progressive activism and has put on dozens of programs and events at Truman State University. Sam has served as President of the Stonewall Group for three years. His leadership has been an essential component in the organization's success.
In 2006, Sam became involved in GLBT issues on a national level when he was appointed the Director of Communications in the College Democrats of America GLBT Caucus. In this position, Sam co-organized a campaign invasion against the proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, organized a college-based initiative against a proposed same-sex couple adoption ban, distributed programming ideas, and wrote monthly emails. He also fundraised for the caucus and participated in several panel discussions about GLBT issues and youth. Sam's involvement with the College Democrats GLBT Caucus and the Stonewall Group on Truman's campus gave him the opportunity to meet with other young, progressive leaders from across the nation. In February, 2007, Sam was unanimously elected to the position of Vice President of the College Democrats of Missouri. Sam helped organize a new caucus system in Missouri and became Co-Chairman of the Missouri College Democrats GLBT Caucus.
In addition to Sam's leadership experiences on a campus, state and national level within the College Democrats, he has interned at the Human Rights Campaign. Sam has a personal determination to fight for fairness, equality and responsible politics. He cares deeply about the issues that he champions and is a passionate advocate for young people.
